SMARTGAS Gas Analysis System
SMARTGAS is a gas analysis system developed by the Coal Mines Technical Services (CMTS) for coal mine applications. The system provides gas chromatographic analysis to monitor mine atmospheres and identify potential or actual hazardous conditions. Data acquisition and remote transfer technology enables the system to be remotely accessed, calibrated and monitored by CMTS technical staff, who can provide 24hour expert on-line support and interpretation of gas analysis trends.
The heart of the system is a state of the art ultra fast micro gas chromatograph (GC). The system is supplied as a complete package and comprises a micro GC, data acquisition software, PC, modem, communications interface, pneumatics panel and a full training package. The unique “auto ranging” capability of this chromatographic system enables key gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide and ethylene to be easily and accurately analysed in concentrations ranging from parts per million to percentage concentrations using a single analytical method. Unlike similar systems, the SMARTGAS micro gas chromatographic system requires only three “Plug and Play” type analytical modules to provide a complete analysis of mine atmospheres.
Components routinely analysed by the system include helium, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ethylene and ethane. Although initially supplied to the Australian coal mining industry, SMARTGAS systems have also been commissioned internationally to countries including China, the United States, New Zealand and South Africa
The data acquisition software captures output data from the gas chromatograph and accurately integrates and calculates the final results. The software is simple to use with only minimal operator input required. Also supplied is the SMARTMATE result trending spreadsheet package. This package enables the trending of results and provides essential information in relation to the state of the atmosphere in underground coal mines. Information produced by SMARTMATE includes general analysis trending in a variety of formats, “air free” trending, “Ellicott's” explosibility diagram, “Graham's” ratio, “Trickett’s” ratio, carbon monoxide make and other relevant ratios and indices.
SMARTGAS has been developed to allow mining personnel to easily operate the system with a minimum of training. Current operators include mine deputies, electrical fitters, ventilation officers, engineers and mine managers.
